Our History: More than a century of current.

Edward Sargent opened his electrical contracting company in 1907 to serve the steel, glass, and coal industries that shaped Pittsburgh. More than a century of technology later, we are still powering your tomorrow, today.

1907

The spark in Pittsburgh

After a career at Westinghouse, Edward Sargent opens his own electrical company, installing electrical equipment from Westinghouse and other major manufacturers. As industry in Pittsburgh and its environs electrifies, Sargent Electric crisscrosses the region, supporting this rapid electrical growth.

1910s–40s

Wiring the industrial age

Sargent commits fully to contracting as Pittsburgh’s mills and factories electrify. A long-standing partnership with key industries such as Duquesne Light anchors the company’s expansion into large-scale electrification. During WWII, Sargent wired landing craft on Neville Island, serving the war effort with the same precision it brought to industry.

1950s

Expanding west

Sargent opens its East Chicago, Indiana office, following the expansion of the steel industry and beginning a footprint that would eventually reach across the eastern half of the country.

A multi-state contractor

Decade by decade, Sargent grows into one of the largest electrical contractors in the states it serves, earning long-term relationships with the names that built American industry including U.S. Steel and General Electric. Specialty contracting spans nuclear, coal and gas power generation.

2000s–20s

Building out renewables

Sargent stands up its Wisconsin division and moves into industrial and commercial work in the upper Midwest, laying the groundwork for what becomes the company’s renewable-energy engine.

2021

Utility-scale solar and storage

Sargent lands its first utility-scale solar project and builds one of the largest battery-storage systems in California. The company that wired coal-era Pittsburgh is now building the grid of the clean-energy era.
