Energy Storage
Project Overview
Cross Town Energy Storage is Maine's first utility-scale battery energy storage facility and the largest BESS operating on the ISO New England grid, located in Gorham, Maine, adjacent to Central Maine Power's 115kV Moshers Substation. Sargent Electric served as the electrical subcontractor under EPC contractor Cianbro Corporation for owner Plus Power, delivering the complete electrical scope across the BESS yard, control house, and substation underground infrastructure on a constrained five-acre site bordered by wetlands on three sides.
Sargent's scope of work included installation of 49 miles of medium and low voltage cable, more than 128,000 linear feet of underground conduit, and a grounding grid across the BESS yard and substation. The team electrically integrated and commissioned all 156 Sungrow PowerTitan battery units, completing more than 8,000 cable terminations and managing sequencing through daisy-chained strings grouped into operational blocks. BIM modeling optimized underground conduit routing across the constrained site, and GNSS layout technology was used to accurately position grounding systems and conduit in the field.
The 175 MW / 350 MWh facility commenced operation in fall 2025, advancing Maine past the halfway mark toward its 400 MW energy storage goal for 2030. The project was completed on schedule with zero recordable safety incidents across 32,500 craft hours, with 40 percent of total labor hours performed by apprentices. During Winter Storm Fern in January 2026, Cross Town ran at full availability, demonstrating its value in real grid operating conditions.
