Double Black Diamond SolarSangamon/Morgan County, IL
Solar Power
Project Overview
Sargent Electric served as electrical contractor on Double Black Diamond's solar field, the largest operating solar facility in Illinois and east of the Mississippi River.
Developed by Swift Current Energy with McCarthy Building Companies as EPC, the facility spans over 4,000 acres across Sangamon and Morgan counties and carries 1.6 million American-made solar modules. Sargent installed the PV-side electrical scope tying the array to the substation, peaking at 190 craft over a 26-month schedule.
The scale of Double Black Diamond is hard to overstate. The facility can produce enough electricity to power more than 100,000 homes. The City of Chicago relies on Double Black Diamond to provide renewable power to 70% of its 411 municipal buildings, including O'Hare International Airport, Midway Airport, and the Jardine Water Purification Plant. The impact on the city's carbon emissions is a reduction of 290,000 metric tons per year, equivalent to taking 62,000 cars off the road.
